It’s becoming an everyday word. We’re reading it, hearing it, discussing it and worrying about it daily. Well, not really! While fear of being hacked and precautions against it are consuming conversations in boardrooms and family rooms everywhere, the STARS Campus Solutions team is staying close to the topic and the news reports as each incident occurs. However, confidence remains extremely high in the security of the data in STARS because the software system resides on the IBM iSeries server.
While hacking has been around for decades, the headlines and news reports are more and more prominent. From huge data breaches to individual identity theft, everyone is alert to the warnings and we’re all more aware of the risks. Reports in the 1980s to today include data attacks involving large and small organizations. The list of data breaches with large organizations includes the US military computers, the database at the Pentagon, Citibank, NASA, the New York Times, JPMorgan Chase, Sony Pictures, the Marriott, AT&T, Google, Apple iCloud and many more.
Naturally, when we hear of hacks into these large organizations, we raise our eyebrows and move on because we don’t sense an immediate direct impact. However, as we pull out our credit cards for every day purchases, we’re all becoming more and more aware of the danger that lurks around us. Hacks into our “daily living” have included OfficeMax, UPS, the US Postal Service, BJ’s, Heartland Payment Systems, Staples, Yahoo! Mail, Michael’s, eBay, Home Depot, Target and Kmart.
So as we purchase paper for the office, craft supplies and backpacks for the kids, place bids on the camera we’ve always wanted, enjoy a day in the park, savor a soft ice cream treat, send a goodie package to grandma and purchase a power tool for dad’s birthday, we’re vulnerable! What about our activity on Facebook, Gmail and Twitter?
Records at schools, colleges and universities are being hacked regularly! Articles on the Internet identify hundreds! Most recently, one headline read, “ Pennsylvania State U Cyberattacks Possibly Part of Larger Trend, experts say.” Educational institutions are targets because of the many access points into their networks for social security numbers, birth dates, financial and personal information. While campus security concerns are addressed with surveillance cameras, guards, etc., cybersecurity must also be a serious topic.
It’s a wonder anyone can sleep! Well, in fact, whether we’re wide awake or snoozing soundly, the “hacktivists” are busy! Rest assured that the team at STARS Campus Solutions is busy, too! While nothing carries a hack free guarantee, STARS is built on the most secure, most reliable platform…..
Selecting the most secure school management system is in everyone’s best interest. Reach for STARS!
